Side-by-Side Safety

Side-by-Side Safety: How to Stay Safe While Off-Roading
Side-by-sides (also known as UTVs) are an awesome way to explore the outdoors and experience some serious fun. But with great adventure comes great responsibility. Whether you’re ripping through sand dunes or cruising forest trails, staying safe ensures that the ride stays fun—for you and everyone around you.
Here are 8 essential safety tips to keep in mind when driving a side-by-side:
1. Always Wear the Right Gear
Your safety starts with what you wear:
- Helmet: Even with a roll cage, a helmet is a must.
- Eye Protection: Goggles or a visor to keep dust, bugs, and debris out.
- Gloves and Boots: For better grip and protection.
- Long sleeves and pants: To protect your skin in the event of a rollover or brush encounter.
2. Buckle Up—Every Time
Side-by-sides come with seat belts for a reason. In rough terrain, they’re your first line of defense. Buckle up before you move an inch—and make sure all passengers do too.
3. Know Your Vehicle’s Limits
UTVs are powerful machines, but they’re not invincible. Know what your specific model can handle:
- Don’t exceed weight or passenger limits.
- Avoid sharp turns at high speeds—they can cause rollovers.
- Understand how your UTV handles different terrain like mud, sand, or rock.
4. Don’t Ride Beyond Your Skill Level
Confidence is great, but overconfidence can get you hurt. Start slow, learn how your side-by-side handles, and build experience before tackling advanced trails or high speeds.
5. Never Drink and Drive
This should go without saying: alcohol and off-roading don’t mix. Always stay sharp and alert—your safety depends on it.
6. Stay on Designated Trails
Not only is it safer to stay on marked trails, but it’s also better for the environment and helps protect access for everyone. Watch for trail markers and be respectful of closures or restricted areas.
7. Inspect Your Vehicle Before Every Ride
A quick pre-ride check can prevent major problems:
- Tires: Check for pressure and damage.
- Brakes: Make sure they’re responsive.
- Steering & Suspension: Look for anything loose or worn.
- Lights: Especially if you’re riding near dusk.
8. Communicate and Ride in Groups
If possible, ride with at least one other person or group. Carry a charged cell phone or two-way radio, and let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to return. The wilderness is amazing—but it’s always better when you have backup.
Final Thoughts
At Open Air Recreation, we love making outdoor adventures easier and more accessible. But we also want our riders to come home safe and happy. Whether you’re renting for the first time or a seasoned weekend warrior, safety should always ride shotgun.
